Founded in 1896 under the name Nan Yang College, the University took its current name in 1920, borrowing the name "Jiao Tong" from the book Yi Jing, "Book of Changes", ancient Chinese divinatory text, in which the words Jiao, "unity", and Tong, "harmony", are juxtaposed to express the sense of peace and blessing that must descend on men so that the nation thrives and flourishes. The University has grown over the years hand in hand with the progress that has invested the "Middle-earth", becoming one of the most excellent study centers in the country, thanks to its twenty-one scientific research institutes with a high level of technological innovation. Careful to cultivate the most motivated and determined talents, the SJTU, as commonly recognized, is in fact a dynamic and stimulating scenario in which the implementation of state-of-the-art knowledge and skills finds fertile ground for application thanks to an open and constant dialogue between Institution and the ever-changing surrounding reality.
And the flagship of this intense and laborious research activity is represented by the Academic Ranking of World Universities, that is the annual ranking that, since June 2003, the University prepares to evaluate the main tertiary education institutions of all the world. The prestigious classification is compiled using a scientific methodology, constant and transparent, based on six objective indicators that aim to evaluate the performances of 1200 Universities in order to select the 500 best. But the wide range of training offered by the Chinese University to its students is also prestigious, guaranteeing excellent training in line with the new demands of the increasingly competitive and global labor market. In addition to traditional degree programs, SJTU offers students from all over the world sixty-four first level courses covering nine important subjects, including economics, law and medicine, with lessons in English or Chinese.
Moreover, as a testimony to the concrete form of international commitment undertaken for years by the academic center, foreign students can attend a pre-university program through which they can improve their linguistic and cultural skills in view of a brilliant university career. And studying in China really represents a passport for the future for many students, thanks to which it is possible to open one's mind to a unique and unrepeatable experience. In recent years, the Dragon Country has become one of the most popular study destinations for students all over the world thanks to the high quality of the educational services offered by schools and universities and to the advantageous living costs that make the stay more comfortable.
But the Chinese education sector is linked not only to the traditional ways of learning at school, but also occupies a prominent place in the provision of services specifically dedicated to those students who, during the summer, want to leave for a new world, to discover, to improve their language skills, but above all to live a priceless moment of personal growth through which to develop those soft skills so important in the era of globalization.
